070643 A person can avoid losing entitlement to benefit because of being absent from GB if the
absence is for the specific purpose of


1. being treated for an incapacity which began before leaving GB 1 or


2. being treated for incapacity or a disabling condition which began before leaving GB 2 or


3. being treated for illness or disability of mind or body which started before the child's absence began 3
or


4. caring for the SDP4 (see DMG 070657) or


5. receiving treatment appropriate to the injury5.

070644 A person may also avoid disqualification of IBST if that person is authorized to go to another

Specific purpose


070645 To keep entitlement to benefit the person must show that


1. the absence was for the specific purpose of being treated, caring or receiving treatment and


2. he or she intended to be treated before leaving GB1.

070646 Although the person needs to have intended to obtain treatment before leaving GB it is not

necessary to know in advance who will give the treatment 1.

SPC absence introduction; continuation and temporary/permanent absence conditions needed.

077001 SPC can continue to be paid whilst a claimant is temporarily absent from GB 1 if the other
conditions of entitlement continue to be satisfied and the absence is no longer than


1. 4 weeks where the absence is not expected to exceed 4 weeks2 or


2. 8 weeks3 where paragraph 077002 applies or


3. 26 weeks4 where paragraph 077003 applies.
